In 2022, Nigeria has emerged as the 38th most crucial market for U.S. agricultural exports, with the United States sending over $631 million worth of c to the country.

Business Insider Africa presents the top 10 U.S. agro exports to Nigeria for the year, a list sourced from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shedding light on the key trade relationship between the two nations.

According to africa.businessinsider.com, Nigeria is a nation blessed with abundant human and material resources, and these blessings are interconnected. As the country’s population is booming, the need to harness its rich natural resources has never been greater.

For instance, Nigeria’s landscape stretches endlessly, teeming with fertile land. Yet, perplexingly, more than half of the country’s arable land—56% to be precise—remains uncultivated, a vast expanse of untapped potential.

Consequently, the country’s agricultural sector has underperformed for decades, contributing to soaring inflation figures.

In July, food inflation was already pretty high at 26.98%, and that set off some alarm bells with the President declaring a state of emergency on food insecurity. Fast forward to September, the figure has become more disturbing reaching an alarming 30.64%.

Available data unmistakably points to the fact that Nigeria is falling short of producing enough food to sustain its population. Hence the country has no option than to resort to importation.

One of Nigeria’s go-to places for importaion is the United States. The country is the 38th most important market for U.S. agricultural exports. In 2022, the U.S. shipped over $631 million worth of agricultural produce to Nigeria.
