The organisers of Akwaaba African Travel Market, the leading Pan-African Travel Expo have confirmed that Rick Taylor, CEO of The Tourism Company and leading MICE expert, will be lead speaker at the 4th edition of the African Travel and Tourism Conference, scheduled to take place as a virtual event on September 21, 2020.
Rick Taylor, CEO of South African based consultancy, The Business Tourism Company, established 2005, has delivered over 200 tourism destination development, management and marketing projects throughout Africa, Europe, Australia, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.
Rick is the strategic architect behind eight Convention Bureaus’ in Southern, East and West Africa. He established the continent’s first convention bureau, Cape Town Convention Bureau in 1998, and the National Convention Bureau for South Africa in 2004. South Africa and Cape Town have since ranked #1 on the ICCA Africa associations ranking for over 20 years. Rwanda Convention Bureau was established in 2014; under Rick’s direction Rwanda elevated its ICCA Africa country ranking from #21 to #3 in 2018, with Kigali ranked #2.
A South African with a solid foundation rooted in the advertising industry, Rick is a sought after international thought leader on the MICE/business events sector, and in the opportunities it holds for economic and social development, a subject he is absolutely passionate about.
Rick is a former board member of a number of leading African and international tourism associations (Destination Marketing Association International USA; South African Minister of Tourism and Environment’s Strategic Management Team; Past Chair – Western Cape Tourism Board (Marketing); Tourism Business Council of South Africa; Past Chair – South African Meetings Industry Federation; Past Chair – South African Federation of Convention Cities; Cape Film Commission; and Past Chair – Great Wine Capitals of the World amongst others).
Rick was the IMEX 2011 Africa and Middle East Academy award recipient in Frankfurt, and the African Meetings Industry Personality of the Year 2016 in Addis Ababa. In 2019 he was listed on the Africa Travel 100 Global Tourism Personalities by organisers of Nigeria’s Akwaaba African Travel Market, the leading Pan-African Tourism Expo.
The African Travel and Tourism Conference is scheduled for Monday, September 21, 2020 via Zoom at 1400hrs Nigerian time; 1600hrs East African time.
The theme for this year’s conference is: Is MICE a Viable Pathway for Tourism Recovery in Africa?
Other panelists for the event include: Sisa Ntshona, CEO of South Africa Tourism; Lily Ajarova, CEO of Uganda Tourism Board; Jacinta Nzioka (Nat. Coordinator/CEO, Kenya Convention Bureau); and Akwasi Agyeman (CEO, Ghana Tourism Authority).
Special Guest of Honour is tourism guru and presidential candidate in the Seychelles elections, Alain St. Ange, while the session will be hosted by Ambassador Ikechi Uko, season travel and tourism expert and organiser of the event.
Akwaaba African Travel Market, the leading Pan-African Tourism Expo is the first travel and tourism fair in West Africa. Scheduled to host its 16th edition this year, Akwaaba has attracted leading experts and stakeholders in the travel, tourism, aviation and hospitality industries from different parts of Africa and the world. In addition, several important dignitaries such as presidents, ministers, ambassadors and high commissioners from different parts of the world have graced the annual event.
