As part of efforts aimed at enhancing its aviation infrastructure and boosting its economic development, Africa’s biggest aviation Group Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with Dar Al-Handasah, an international consulting firm, to design and oversee the construction of a new mega airport.
According to Ethiopian Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew, the new hub will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year and provide parking for 270 aircraf tonce completed in five years.

The airport will be located near Bishoftu town, approximately 42 km east of the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
“It is a five-year project that will be finalised in 2029. It will be the biggest in Africa. Phase one alone will cost at least $6 billion. The money will come through loans and there are already companies that already showed interest,” Mesfin said. Ethiopian Airlines carried 17.1 million passengers in the 2023/2024 financial year and expects to carry 20 million passengers in the new financial year that started on July 8, 2024. The new airport will include shopping and hotel facilities.
