Mariott continues to be a trendsetter when it comes to an environmental approach in the hospitality industry. More than 7000 hotels with and over 1.2 million rooms, more than 350 million bottles of shampoo, 350 million bottles of conditioner, 350 million bottles of soap are purchased by this hotel chain every month.
It started years ago in cutting down housekeeping in urging guests to use bed sheets and towels several times before they would be changed. This eliminated the need and the cost to keep rooms in Marriott Hotel clean, and for guests to re-use their sheets and feeling good about.
This was followed by eliminating straws from dinks about a year ago.
Usually, when a trendsetter like Marriott sets the stage, others will follow. Interconti already did and actually had started this process in many of their hotel already years ago.
Marriott said in a statement: “We as a company launched our next generation of sustainability and social impact goals in October of 2017.
As part of that effort, we set a lot of goals, and two of those relate directly to this particular initiative. One was to reduce our landfill waste by 45 percent and the other one was related to responsibly sourcing in our guest room amenities. We launched initially with ten of our brands moving to large-size amenities bottles in various phases in 2018, and [recently] we announced we’re moving the majority of our portfolio to those large-size bottles. ”
Marriott is replacing the tiny bottles with large bottles and recyclable plastic. This will result in a reduction of 1.7 million pounds of plastic a year. Let’s stay tuned for Hyatt, Hilton, Corinthia, Four Seasons, and the many other hotel brands in the world.
Our environment may just have to deal with 5 million or more pound of unnecessary waste. Congratulations Marriott!
