Houston

Drive-in movie theaters are surging in popularity due to the pandemic and the new drive-in east of downtown Houston is making the headlines for the right reason as the first and only Black-owned drive-in movie theater in Houston, Texas.

Khairi Sharif, 26, is opening Space City Shows to provide entertainment in the midst of the pandemic for people who love going to the cinemas just like him.

The venue features a 20-by-40-foot silver screen, which is supported by three shipping containers. “I enjoy going to the movies, whether it’s to see a new movie or even an old movie,” Sharif said. “You know, the blue ICEE, some nachos, some candy. I wasn’t able to do that with coronavirus going on.

So my mind got to wandering, and I thought of [starting] a drive-in movie theater.”

According to www.blackenterprise.com, Sharif began searching for a location and pushed through with the process of acquiring movie licenses and finalizing other paperwork to make his dream theater come true.

As the city’s newest pop-up drive-in movie theater, Space City Shows is located at 2300 Runnels Street in Houston’s East Downtown (EADO) area. It offers a wide range of movies, from old to new, that will be shown every weekend.

Moviegoers also get to enjoy the skyline view of the city, as well as various food choices from food trucks and a live DJ before and after each film showing.
[5:37 AM, 11/7/2020] Emeka: News: Prince Harry admits he didn’t know unconscious bias existed until he met wife, Meghan Markle

Prince Harry says he only became aware of unconscious racial bias after “living a day” in the shoes of his wife, Meghan Markle.

According to alkhaleejtoday.co, The Duke of Sussex who resigned as a working member of the royal family earlier this year, said he hadn’t previously realized that there was an unconscious prejudice due to his “upbringing and training”.

“Unconscious bias, from my understanding, having the upbringing and the education that I had, I had no idea what it was. I had no idea it existed,” Harry said in a video chat from his new home in Montecito, California with Black Lives Matter activist Patrick Hutchinson for GQ magazine.

“It’s when you can’t really point your fingers, especially when it comes to unconscious bias, but when you realize or feel a little uncomfortable, it’s up to you to go out and educate yourself because ignorance is no longer an excuse. “Said Harry during the conversation.

“As I understand it, I had no idea what it was because I had the education and training I had. I had no idea they existed, ”he added. “As sad as it is, it took me many, many years to realize it. Especially when I’ve lived in my wife’s shoes for a day or a week.” Hutchinson said, “You have to be willing to listen and have the conversation, to have these awkward conversations.

Because it’s an awkward conversation and I totally understand. Especially for a white person. Who wants to know that they may have. ”A bit of racism in them?”

The Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge attended Eton College, a private boarding school for boys valued at US$55,000 per year.

The school Harry attended from 1998 to 2003 recently apologized for its response to racism that one of the school’s first black students experienced in the 1960s. Dillibe Onyeama was told he was no longer allowed to visit Eton after writing a book describing the racist treatment he experienced at the school, which was published in 1972.

The book describes Onyeama’s former classmates who attribute his poor grades to his race and accuse him of cheating on and assaulting his mother. Simon Henderson, who has been the school principal since 2015, said earlier this year that he would like to meet Onyeama to apologize personally.

“I will invite Mr. Onyeama to meet to personally apologize to him on behalf of the school and to make it clear that he will always be welcome at Eton,” Henderson said in a statement according to The New York Mal.

Prince Harry did not address Meghan Markle’s experience of unconscious bias while speaking with Hutchinson. Previously, however, he had mentioned some of the racist press coverage of the Duchess in 2016, hoping that they would “stop and think about their coverage” before further damage was done.

Just some of the headlines Markle has faced over the years have been that she “fueled human rights abuses, drought and murder” for eating avocados, and that her mother’s hometown was “(almost) straight from Compton” and “from gangs was drawn.”

“We would not comment on the following,” one Buckingham Palace said when an insider contacted him about the article. “The Duke is not a working member of the royal family and any comments he makes are made on a personal basis.”
