The African Diaspora Congress (ADC), representing the united voices of the African Diaspora and African Diaspora’s Sixth Region, hereby calls for His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahamat to resign or be removed as the Chairman of the African Union Commission. His exit has become necessary because we strongly believe that H.E. Mahamat no longer represents the interests of Africans and peoples of African descent.
The unceremonious removal of Her Excellency Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao from her duties as AU Ambassador to the US, effective November 1, 2019 by AU Chairman H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, sent shockwaves throughout the African Diaspora worldwide. Ever since her letter of termination was made public in early October, there has been a deafening global outcry among not only Africans in Diaspora but also friends of Africa for the reinstatement of Ambassador Chihombori-Quao.
Such global reactions, which included countless social and print media condemnations, were foreground in her aptitude and triumphs as Ambassador. During her short tenure as Ambassador, despite working with minimal staffing, Ambassador Chihombori-Quao was able to transform the AU Mission in Washington DC into a formidable Embassy that engages the African Diaspora in line with AU Agenda 2063. To her credit, Ambassador Chihombori-Quao successfully energized and connected the African Diaspora to the AU’s mission like no other envoy before her.
Since October, the African Diaspora Congress has made several attempts to engage H.E. Mahamat and plead for Ambassador Chihombori-Quao’s reinstatement. This was followed by our first petition for her reinstatement, which went viral and garnered over 95,000 signatures in just a few weeks. As a follow-up, ADC also sent a formal letter to H.E. Mahamat detailing ADC’s reasons for identifying with and supporting the Ambassador’s cause.
Copies of this letter were sent to the various African diplomatic missions and Heads of States. H.E. Mahamat ignored all appeals, and instead of addressing our concerns, he continues to engage in smear campaign against Ambassador Chihombori-Quao (see the latest smear press release) to justify his disingenuous actions (and listen to the ambassador’s response here). He has since dispatched his minions to Washington DC to dismantle every innovative programs, projects, and progress that Ambassador Arikana put in place in the United States for the African Union.
Evidently, H.E. Mahamat does not represent the interests of a united AU, Africans, or peoples of African descent. Indeed, he does not take his marching orders from the AU. Too much is at stake for this to be ignored. It is against this backdrop that we, the ADC, insist that H. E. Mahamat should voluntarily tender his resignation to the AU or be removed from office.
Indisputably, the retention of H. E. Mahamat in office as chairman of the AU Commission will not only tarnish Africa’s image globally but also sends the erroneous message that Africans support the continuation of neocolonial manipulations and exploitation. Furthermore, his continued stay in office will undermine the future relationship between the African Union, the entire African Diaspora, and their friends from around the world.
ADC is determined to continue its campaigns with all African Heads of States and the international community to end H. E. Mahamat’s tenure as AU Commission Chairman. The entire AU as a body should be extremely concerned because these developments are now beyond Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao.
H. E. Moussa Mahamat is not the brand of leader that Africa needs today as the world ushers in this season of change with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), alignments with AU Agenda 2063, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG‘s). In the event that H.E. Faki Mahamat remains in his position as Head of the AU Commission, French neocolonial stranglehold on Africa will be maintained.
Please sign and share this petition for the removal of H.E. Moussa Faki Muhamat from office and show the world that you support a strong, liberated, self-sustaining, and prosperous Africa. People of African descent are awake and ready to stand for justice. Join us by signing and sharing this petition.
