Tourism: At Accra Weizo, Nura Sani Kangiwa, Named ‘Hospitality Personality Of The Year West Africa’

Nura Kangiwa probably needs no introduction in the tourism and hospitality industry in Nigeria. He is the Director General of Nigeria’s National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR). As is fame, so is his frame, that spills beyond the sectors.

The Director General recently bagged the Balafon Award as the ‘Hospitality Personality of the Year West Africa’, at the just concluded Accra Weizo travel and tourism fair held in Ghana.

NIHOTOUR, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, which he heads, was established by an Act of Parliament to train, certify and register all personnel in Nigeria’s hospitality, travel and tourism sectors.

He is also the President of Nigeria Polo Federation (NPF) – the official regulator of the sport in Nigeria and affiliated to International Polo Federation.

Nura Kangiwa is a traditional title holder. He hails from a royal family in the ancient kingdom of Argungu, which territory traverses three West African countries, namely Nigeria, Niger and Benin Republic. After the demise of his father, he inherited his title and was turbaned ‘Turakin Kebbi’ by His Royal Highness, the Emir of Argungu, on 5th February 2011. He was born on the 10th of May 1970, in Argungu in Kebbi State, North-West Nigeria.

Nura Kangiwa is a consummate Tourism management technocrat and a renowned tourism promoter in Nigeria and West Africa. He is roundly educated in Nigeria and Europe in the fields of Social Sciences and Tourism Management. In 1992, Nura obtained a National Diploma in Business Administration from Kebbi State Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi. Subsequently, he received a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc) in Political Science from Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto in 1997. And a Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) on Tourism Policy and Strategy from Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, Milan, Italy in 2006.

Nura Kangiwa is instrumental to the revamping of the famous Argungu International Fishing Festival, after a decade of the event no-show. He is, equally, the mastermind behind the successful sports tourism event: the “ARGUNGU POLO TOURNAMENT & CULTURAL FETE”. The Fete is a dexterous tourism product created by Nura in 2017. It was borne out of his unquenchable interests in the game of Polo and his zeal for promoting cultural tourism. For the past 5 years the fete has continued to attract hundreds of players, artistes and spectators from Nigeria, Niger, and Benin Republic annually.

Since becoming the Director General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) in September 1, 2020, Turaki Nura Kangiwa has greatly improved the operations and training capacity of the Institute. He has increased the number of NIHOTOUR Campuses and Training Centres from 8 to 12, in less than 2 years. He’s led NIHOTOUR to be one of the best IATA Training Centres in Africa. Under his leadership NIHOTOUR has trained (free of charge) over 7,000 youths and women across Nigeria’s 6 geopolitical zones in Hospitality and Tourism trade and occupational skills. The DG is on record as one of the most active supporters of Nigeria’s Tourism private sector, especially Associations under the umbrella of FTAN.

Nura Kangiwa is an avid sport man. He has participated in several Polo Tournaments and won Trophies. He is the Patron of NSK Polo team. Every year he plays in the Nigerian Polo Federation Tournaments and many other famous polo tournaments and clubs around the world.

Nura Kangiwa was also honoured by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria with an Award Of Excellence for advancing Nigeria Relations with China.’
