Ethiopia and Qatar have concluded discussions to resume meat exports, with trade expected to restart before the holy month of Ramadan.
According to birrmetrics, both nations have reached an agreement to revive a long-standing meat trade partnership that had stalled in recent years due to undisclosed challenges. Qatar has historically been a key export destination for Ethiopian meat products.
The move aligns with Ethiopia’s broader push to strengthen meat exports across the Middle East. In a related development, Agriculture Minister Addisu Arega met with Jordan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, securing a separate agreement to expand meat trade with Jordan.
The pack ethiopia will begin shipping significant volumes of meat to Jordan starting next month. Officials say the deal is expected to substantially boost bilateral trade between the two countries. Beyond meat, the two sides have also agreed to expand cooperation in trade, supply chains, and investment across other agricultural sectors.
Ethiopia’s meat industry once a steady foreign exchange earner has faced mounting pressure in recent years due to domestic supply chain disruptions and rising production costs, particularly in animal feed.
Price increases in livestock feed have hit exporters hard, squeezing margins and affecting shipment volumes. Industry stakeholders, including feed processors and byproduct suppliers, have also reported operational challenges.
In a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture acknowledged the sector’s difficulties, affirming that comprehensive efforts are underway to address these constraints and ensure the sector’s stability for future growth.
