Governor Dr. Alex Otti has confirmed that the Abia Medical City—a massive $1.3 billion healthcare project—will be officially flagged off by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Amapu, Umuovo in Isialangwa North LGA.
This game-changing event will happen on the same day the remodeled Port Harcourt Road is commissioned.
Here are 5 things you need to know:
1 Private Sector Powered:
The project is 100% private-sector funded. The state is providing land and full institutional support, but the real money—over 2 trillion naira—is coming from global investors. That’s investor confidence in action!
2 More Than a Hospital:
This isn’t just a hospital—it’s a full medical ecosystem. Think world-class healthcare + medical training + research + tourism. Governor Otti says it’ll rival facilities in Dubai, Texas, and other global medical hubs.
3 Luxury Meets Emergency Care:
Expect a helipad, a 5-star hotel, and condominiums. Patients and their families can access top-tier accommodation and services while receiving treatment. With the Abia International Airport also in progress, this is becoming a true medical destination.
4 An End to Medical Tourism:
Nigerians spend millions abroad on healthcare yearly. This project is designed to stop that. The Medical City will offer the same (or better!) care here at home—cutting costs, saving lives, and boosting our economy.
5 Public Hospitals Still a Priority:
Worried about your local health center? Don’t be. Abia is upgrading over 200 PHCs, 4 general hospitals, and ABSUTH. Plus, health workers in the state are now on a new, improved wage structure—matching their Abuja counterparts.
Bottom Line:
Abia is about to witness a healthcare revolution. In just 21 days, the journey begins!
This is more than a project—it’s a promise to Ndi Abia and to Nigeria. Stay tuned, and mark your calendar for May 23.
