Do you know that some of the best of Africa come alive during this time of year? Here is a list of places you can plan your escapes for.

You deserve a getaway this December. Here’s a list of places with buck load of activities to do this period.

1. Calabar, Nigeria
The city of Calabar in Nigeria is one city that comes alive in December. The contrast in visiting this time and any other time in the year is very clear. This is because this is the time when the Calabar Carnival happens. This is the peak of tourism in Cross River state, and perhaps the whole of Nigeria. For the whole of December, tourists from all over the world gather for the procession and display of culture and Heritage from Cross River and different parts of Nigeria.

2. Indian Ocean Islands: Seychelles, Mauritius, Mozambique
Though a bit pricey, the best time to visit these islands — Seychelles, Mauritius and Mozambique — is now. Temperatures are at their hottest during November and December; plus, there’s an almost guaranteed 6 to 8 hours of sunshine a day. You can switch up your boring Christmas for days in the sun, sand and under the whispering palms. If you are keen on adventures in the water or up the mountains, that can also be arranged.

3. Cape Town, South Africa
The weather in Cape Town is warm and sunny, so this guarantees countless days on the beach. A lot of people are also thinking this, so you better book ASAP. However, don’t expect an exciting safari experience as there are not a lot of animals out at this time of the year in South Africa.

4. Namibia
Namibia is an exotic paradise, mostly overlooked by Africans. However, because of the rainy seasons, Northern Namibia is the place for you. Head straight up to Serra Cafema in Kaokoland and boat along the Kunene River (a surreal experience in the heart of the dry, wind-blown landscape), before seeking out desert-adapted elephant in the hills around Haonib Valley Camp, and you can even get a flying safari experience.

5. Kenya
A trip to Kenya is one of the few exotic and budget-friendly vacations Nigerians can make without a visa. Elephants, crocodiles, zebra, buffalos, rhinos, and Big cats, are just a few of the rare animals you can see in Kenya’s national parks. Apart from the safari experiences, you can immerse yourself fully in the culture of the Masai people or have a relaxing day at Diani Beach with a drink in hand. However, mid-December is the best time to visit as it is after the short rains.
