Africa: Badagry tourism stakeholders task government on improved infrastructure


Following in the footsteps of the Special Adviser to the Lagos Government on Tourism and Culture, Solomon Bonu who used the Hybrid World Tourism Day event organised by the Ministry of Tourism to lament the poor state of the Lagos-Badagry road, Stakeholders in the city have lamented the deplorable road network in the region inhibiting the growth of the sector and killing businesses in the axis, while calling the government to expedite action on the road to make it accessible to tourist.

The stakeholders at the maiden event to recognise tourism practitioner engage in promoting the destination and also mark the World Tourism Day, said the Lagos tourism sector could be the next gold mine of the country if all levels of government give priority to the development of necessary infrastructure such as good road network and creating the enabling environment to make the sector thrive in line with global best tourism practices.

Speaking at the event, Supervisor for Environment and Tourism, Badagry Local government, Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon said for many rural Communities, tourism means opportunity to provide jobs and economic empowerment for women and youth adding that gives rural communities the ability to protect and promote their natural surroundings, as well as their culture and heritage. In doing so, it allows tourists to enjoy unique experiences.

Apata stated the theme for this year World Tourism Day: “Tourism and Rural Development” is coming at a critical moment, as countries around the world look to tourism sector to drive recovery, including rural communities where the industry is a leading employer and economic pillars.

Hon. Apata who described the ancient city of Badagry as the cradle of tourism in Nigeria, said that it’s high time that the state government harness the tourism potentials that abound in Badagry, as other advanced countries have done.

He also charged the state government to hasten the construction of Badagry – Lagos Expressway, noting that tourism cannot thrive without a good road.

According to him the event of recognition of quality contributions of the operators in promoting the destination will be a continuous exercise to keep the passion moving for the growth of Tourism in Badagry, Lagos and by extension, Nigeria.

“To explore profitable partnership that will lead to a more impactful and workable tourism sector in Badagry, major operators in the sector that has been promoting, managing and preserving all our potentials were recognized and appreciated each with a certificate of commendation to commemorate the 2020 world tourism day and was fully signed by the mayor of Badagry Hon. Onilude Segun Adeniran.”

“Tourism practitioners, Tourism enthusiasts and tourists in and around Lagos all trooped in to celebrate with us in the ancient Badagry.”

Also in his speech, an Hotelier and stakeholder in the Tourism Industry, Mr. Whedeyon Hundeyin, MD Soketa Hotel & Vice President, Association of hoteliers, Lagos lamented the deplorable condition of Badagry road which has killed the hospitality and tourism industry in the axis. He appealed to relevant authorities to assist in fixing the major road network, which connects Nigeria to it’s West African neighbours.

Miss Temitope George also said that the world tourism day was meant to showcase the rich culture of Badagry including her cuisine. Miss George stressed further that Badagry delicacies are nutritious and medicinal for human wellbeing.

Dignitaries were not left out of the celebration such as Mr. Hundeyin Whedeyon Adolfus, MD/CEO Soketa & Vice President Hoteliers Association, Lagos & his beautiful wife MD, Jumobeth Spa, Mrs. Jumoke Hundeyin, Asiwaju Saliu Attah, MD/CEO AUCL, Chief Obanla, Baale Ogbetedo, Oto-Awori, Hon. Risikat Padonu Hassan, Supervisor for Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation, Badagry Local Government, Chief Hunkanlin Emmanuel, Ovigan of Badagry Kingdom & MD, Badagry Recreational Centre, and various media houses both within and outside Badagry.

The maiden edition of the World Tourism Day event in Badagry came to an end with musical performances by Daddysax in a solo performance and Afoslide a trombonist & an invited guest artiste from Lagos was on stage also.

Popular DJ Hotega from Raypower made a brief appearance while the Association of Juju Musicians of Badagry (AJUMN) led by King Jerry Silver (Staccato) took over the stage and perfectly thrilled the audience to stupor.
