Detty December

Nigeria’s globally popular Detty December phenomenon is largely driven by chance rather than deliberate planning, according to George Uriesi, Acting Managing Director/CEO of Ibom Air.

Speaking at the Naija7Wonders Zoom conference, Uriesi described the annual festive surge in visitors as an unstructured outcome of Nigeria’s cultural vibrancy rather than a coordinated tourism strategy.

“We didn’t do anything to make it happen. It’s luck,” he said. “We just have energetic young people, a vibrant culture, and diaspora Nigerians who come home and invite others.”

He noted that the influx of visitors—especially during December—has filled hotels and event venues across Lagos, despite the absence of a formal tourism framework.

However, Uriesi warned that relying on spontaneity limits the country’s ability to scale the opportunity.

Drawing from his experience with the Cape Town International Convention Centre, he explained how deliberate infrastructure investment helped transform Cape Town into a year-round tourism destination.

“An anchor project can change everything. Conferences brought people in, and those people returned with families and friends,” he said.

He urged Nigerian stakeholders to move beyond opportunistic gains and develop structured tourism drivers that can sustain demand beyond the festive season.
