Smartwings From Hungary

Kenya has taken another step in strengthening its international tourism connectivity with the launch of a new direct charter flight linking Europe to the country’s coastal hub.

Moi International Airport, Mombasa, on Wednesday received its inaugural direct charter service from Budapest, Hungary, operated by Smartwings in partnership with Private Safaris and IBUSZ. The arrival was marked with a ceremonial water cannon salute, symbolising the significance of the new route.

Aviation and tourism officials said the charter flight is expected to boost visitor numbers from Central and Eastern Europe, providing easier access to Kenya’s beaches, wildlife attractions and cultural experiences along the coast. The new connection also reflects growing confidence among international tour operators in Kenya’s tourism recovery and market potential.

The Kenya Airports Authority described the launch as a milestone for Mombasa’s aviation growth, noting that expanded direct air links play a key role in supporting tourism, trade and regional development.

There to welcome the flight was KAA Board Chairman Hon. Caleb Kositany, Private Safaris CEO Alexander Spiro, Smartwings CEO Attila Farkas, KAA GM Operations and Safety, Dr. Simon Peter, Regional Airport Manager, Coast Region, Abel Gogo and Mombasa County CEC in charge of Tourism, Mohamed Osman.

This new weekly service, set to operate for 9 rotations, promises a significant boost for Mombasa’s economy, delivering high-value Eastern European tourists eager for Kenyan beaches, safaris, and Swahili culture, while joining the elite roster of already established charter operators at Moi International Airport including Condor, Neos Air, Discover Airlines and Enterair.
