Africa: Experts Emphasizes on Wildlife Conservation and Sustainable Tourism Practices at NATOP’s 7th Annual General Meeting in Ekiti State

The Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) recently held its 7th Annual General Meeting and Conference at the prestigious Bimbo Owolabi Hall of Afe Babalola University in Ekiti State.

The event brought together industry experts, tour operators, and stakeholders who emphasized the economic value generated by the tourism sector and called for increased government involvement to support its growth.

Ime Udo, the National President of NATOP, delivered a passionate address highlighting the crucial role tour operators play in driving economic value domestically and internationally. Udo emphasized the significant contributions made by tour operators in bringing together various products, including airlines, resorts, tour sites, and destinations.

“We need to change the narrative and raise awareness about the economic value that the tourism sector brings,” expressed Udo. “It should not be business as usual; we must establish partnerships and advocate for increased government involvement. By placing tourism at the forefront, the government can support tour operators in generating substantial revenue.”

The conference commenced with the welcoming of new members to the association, who received their certification of membership from Mr. Ikechi Uko and Sir Gabe Onah. Ambassador Ikechi Uko, a renowned Nigerian tourism consultant, delivered a short presentation emphasizing the importance of collaboration among tour operators to promote destinations within Nigeria.

The Executive governor of Ekiti state who was duly represented by the SA Investment, Trade & Industry, Mrs. Tayo Adeola, took attendees on a virtual tour of the various destinations in Ekiti. From the Ikogosi Warm Spring to the Erinta Waterfall, and the Olosunta and Orole hills, the state’s natural wonders were showcased. She encouraged everyone to visit and promote Ekiti’s beautiful destinations.

The Uganda Tourism Board highlighted Uganda’s rich tourism industry, showcasing its mountains and gorillas, while stressing the importance of protecting and promoting the country’s tourism assets.

Prof. Edem A. Eniang, a distinguished figure in wildlife management and conservation, shared his expertise on the diverse wildlife species in Ekiti State, including endangered birds, tortoises, monitor lizards, insects, rodents, and crocodiles. He urged attendees to prioritize protecting and promoting the state’s wildlife before seeking such experiences abroad.

The conference also featured panel discussions with Abiola Adelana, Tourism and Creative Sector Business Head at Sterling Bank; Mark More, CEO of Motley Travels and Logistics Limited; Bosede Adenike Kosemani, Project Manager of Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC); and Obinna Nwaogu, Country Head for Treepz Inc. They discussed sustainability principles, the industry’s importance, the way forward, and practical steps towards sustainability. They also highlighted the Bank of Industry’s commitment to contributing to the growth and development of sustainable tourism.

The event concluded with an appreciation message from the Vice-Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, expressing gratitude to all participants and showcasing the tourism facilities available within the institution.

The NATOP conference served as a compelling platform to promote the tourism sector’s economic value and advocate for increased government support. With industry experts and stakeholders united, Nigeria’s tourism industry is poised for growth, generating revenue and preserving its natural beauty for future generations.
