The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to allow essential repairs and rehabilitation works. In a press release dated October 8, 2026, FAAN said the closure is tentatively scheduled to commence on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation.
According to the Authority, the intervention has become necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracking, which have been further aggravated by recent heavy rainfall. The rehabilitation programme will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition. FAAN said the work is particularly important ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.
The project will also include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the South-East region grows. FAAN said the expansion is intended to improve passenger comfort and support a more seamless travel experience. The proposed closure is expected to affect flight operations at the airport during the work period. FAAN has therefore advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri to remain in contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.
The Authority said it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they have been finalised. FAAN also appealed to passengers, airlines and other airport users for their understanding and cooperation, describing the intervention as part of its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
