Burkina Faso and Ghana have signed a landmark free roaming agreement, enabling mobile phone users to communicate at local domestic rates when traveling across their shared border.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in regional telecommunications integration, as observed during a signing ceremony organized by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) in Ouagadougou on November 21, 2025.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the agreement signifies a crucial step towards improving the accessibility and integration of telecommunications services between Burkina Faso and Ghana. ARCEP’s Executive Secretary, Patrice Compaore, highlighted the involvement of technical teams and operators throughout the process to ensure the agreement’s effective implementation. The removal of roaming charges aims to enable Burkinabe travelers in Ghana and Ghanaian nationals in Burkina Faso to communicate at rates similar to those in their home countries.

Mr. Compaore emphasized that the agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation by enhancing communication and exchanges between the two nations. Dr. Aminata Zerbo/Sabane, the Minister of Digital Transition, Posts and Electronic Communications, announced plans to extend this initiative to Mali and subsequently to Niger, in collaboration with Ghana. She also noted that Burkina Faso already benefits from free roaming with AES countries and Togo, aligning with ongoing efforts to improve connectivity in the sub-region. The minister acknowledged the diligent work of the teams involved, which facilitated the successful signing of the agreement.
