The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) seeks to provide assurance to the public regarding aviation safety and security in the wake of the emergency landing of Delta Airlines flight DL157, which took place on Friday, September 8, 2023.

According to gh-aviation.com, the incident, involving a flight that originated from Accra and was en route to New York with 215 passengers and 6 crew members, unfolded due to technical challenges.

While in transit from Accra to its final destination, the aircraft encountered technical issues. In response to these challenges, the flight crew took proactive measures and executed an emergency landing at Lajes Airport on Terceira Island, Portugal. This decisive action ensured the safety of all 215 passengers and crew members on board.

Following the safe landing, all passengers and crew disembarked from the Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. They were then accommodated on another Delta Airlines flight, albeit after a lengthy delay, to continue their journey to New York.

It’s important to note that this incident did not occur within the Accra Flight Information Region or Ghana’s territory. Nonetheless, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has initiated communication with Delta Airlines and other relevant authorities to gather information and insights regarding the emergency landing.

As the regulatory body overseeing air transport in Ghana, the GCAA underscores its unwavering commitment to upholding public safety and security in the aviation industry. The authority is dedicated to working diligently with all stakeholders to maintain and enhance the safety and confidence of air travel within and connected to Ghana.
