Africa: Ghana Tourism Minister unveils late Congressman, John Lewis’ name others on the Sankofa Memorial Wall

Ghanaian Minister of Tourism, and Creative Arts, Honorable Barbara Oteng Gyasi has unveiled the name of late United States Congressman John Robert Lewis on the Sankofa Wall of Fame, next to his wife Lilian’s on Monday at the W E B Dubois Center in Accra, Ghana.

Also unveiled at the ceremony were the names of Odith Jakes, Congressman Elijah Cummings, and Cordy Tindell Vivian who also played critical roles in the civil rights movement

According to dntghana.com, the unveiling was part of wreath laying ceremonies for 2020 Emancipation Day Celebrations organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Forum.

Wreaths were laid at three different locations – the W E B Dubois Center, George Padmore Library, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts Honorable Barbara Oteng Gyasi laid the first set of wreaths on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana at all three locations.

On behalf of the Global African Family Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ereika Bennett laid the wreaths at all three locations. Third and fourth sets of wreaths were also laid at the three locations on behalf od the traditional rulers and the youth of Ghana respectively.

Speaking at the unveiling of his name on the wall, Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Erieka Bennett reminder the guests and dignitaries that Congressman John Lewis was present last year at that same spot during the unveiling of his wife’s name.

In an interview with DNT, Ambassador Bennett said his wife Lilian Miles Lewis’ name was mounted when the civil rights iconic “was in Ghana with the Congressional Black Caucus to commentate the Year of Return 2019.” She added that the other three names were mounted alongside Lewis’ because that is what he would want.
