Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially opened the second phase of the Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange in Accra.
The project aims to ease traffic flow and improve connectivity in one of the capital’s busiest areas.
According to peacefmonline.com, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the second phase of the Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange project to alleviate traffic congestion in Accra.
The phase 2 of the interchange comprises a Flyover on the Ring Road West (Awudome to Central Mosque at Abbosey Okai), widening of the Ring Road West (from Awudome Junction to Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange) into a 2 x 3 dual carriageway and an improvement of the Awudome Road & Nii Teiko Din Street.
The phase 1 of the interchange which was completed in November 2020, introduced a 550-meter east-west flyover between Graphic Road and Dr. Busia Highway (Kaneshie Mallam Road), significantly improving traffic conditions in the area.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significance of the project, emphasizing its role in reducing traffic congestion, improving road safety, and enhancing trade and commerce in Accra and beyond.

“This project is a catalyst for economic vibrancy in the capital. It will facilitate the seamless movement of goods and services, thereby reducing the cost of doing business and attracting much needed investment to the region,” he said.
The President indicated that the various projects completed by his government are a strong indication of his government’s commitment to improving Ghana’s road network.
“This project is one among many that our government has executed to elevate the standard of living Ghanaians. Over the past eight years, we have undertaken significant infrastructure projects across the nation. These include the Pokuase Interchange, the largest of its kind in West Africa, whose completion has eased traffic congestion and improved connectivity.”
“The historic Tamale interchange, the first in northern Ghana and the Bechem-Techimantia-Akomadan road, which has unlocked vital agricultural hubs, enhancing trade and livelihoods,“ he noted.
He said the completion of Phase 2 is expected to further ease traffic congestion, improve mobility on the western parts of the Ring Road, and enhance access to key areas such as the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Abossey Okai spare parts market,” he added.
On his part, Minister for Roads for Highways, Francis Asenso- Boakye reiterated government’s commitment to improving urban mobility and transforming the lives of Ghanaians, through efficient and sustainable road infrastructure.
He explained that the project will significantly improve traffic flow between key arterials, including the Ring Road West towards the Nkrumah Interchange and the Ring Road West Extension towards Abossey Okai.
Providing the technical details of the project, Hon. Asenso-Boakye said the 3-tier interchange features a 389-meter bridge, providing a direct link for traffic on Ring Road West across the Obetsebi Lamptey Circle. This bridge descends prior to the Abossey Okai traffic lights, ensuring seamless movement for commuters and effectively eliminating delays caused by cross-traffic.”
He further explained that in order to enhance mobility, the Nii-Teiko Din intersection on the Kaneshie-Mallam Road has been reconfigured to allow right-in and right-out movements only.
“By eliminating traffic lights and redirecting left-turn maneuvers to either the reconfigured Circle or alternative junctions, we have streamlined traffic flow and reduced unnecessary stops.”
“Additionally, a pedestrian footbridge over Ring Road West at the Awudome-Adjuma Crescent junction has been incorporated to ensure safe and efficient pedestrian movement across this busy corridor. This infrastructure demonstrates our commitment to prioritizing pedestrian safety,” the Minister indicated.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye said the Obetsebi Interchange Phase II Project is a testament to the government’s continuous commitment to improving urban mobility and transforming the lives of Ghanaians, through efficient and sustainable road infrastructure.
