Africa: Ghana’s Western Region plans to build Marina at Funko to boost tourism


The Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah says plans are underway to make the Western Region of Ghana the number one tourist destination in the country.

According to, the minister while speaking on the Jolly Breakfast Show (JBS) on Wednesday, January 5, indicated that it is the vision of the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) and some private entities to make the region a tourist haven to boost the economy.

He indicated, even though Sekondi-Takoradi is now the Christmas destination in Ghana and Africa at large, their agenda is to make it an all-year affair, where tourists will be visiting the region throughout the year and not only Christmas.

Mr Darko-Mensah indicated they have been in talks with some investors to develop sites in which a Marina will be involved.
According to him, the Marina will be situated at Funko and the investors are planning on importing boats for the project.

Also, the Spanish government has agreed to support the Western Region tourist agenda by renovating all the castles and forts in the region which a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed in 2022 between the two countries for the project to begin.

The Regional Minister further indicated that they are also in preparation to fix all the tourist destination roads in the region for easy access.

However, these many other plans have been considered to make the vision a reality which the WRCC is working keenly with investors, foreign countries and other investors for the project.
