The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Secretary General, Juan Carlos Salazar, has urged African countries to speak with one voice and take a stronger leadership role in shaping the future of global aviation.
He said the continent’s growing air transport demand presents significant opportunities to drive economic growth, regional integration and social development.
Aviation leaders from across the continent have gathered in Cairo, Egypt, this week for the 11th AFI Aviation Week to advance the priorities that will shape the future of air transport across the African and Indian Ocean (AFI) region.
As one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, Africa has a unique opportunity to strengthen connectivity, accelerate implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), enhance safety and security, mobilize investment, and build a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive aviation system.
Throughout the week, African States, regional organizations, and industry partners will work together to strengthen regional cooperation, advance implementation, and help shape a common African position ahead of the ICAO Worldwide Air Transport Conference #ICAOATCONF7 this November.
These efforts will help unlock aviation’s full potential as a driver of economic growth, regional integration and sustainable development across Africa.
