In a bid to cement its status as a top sports tourism hub, Kenya has introduced the Magical Kenya Mountain & Trail Series.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Kenya Tourism Board in partnership with Athletics Kenya, highlights the nation’s natural landscapes as ideal venues for outdoor sports and adventure.

According to tourismupdate.co.za, the series kicks off on January 13 in Laikipia and winds through Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu and Nandi County before ending with the Tinderet Barngetuny Mountain Run on January 18.

Peter Angwenyi, Chairman of Athletics Kenya Mountain Running, highlighted the collaboration’s significance: “Mountain running in Kenya is enhancing sports tourism. We are appealing to Kenyans to turn up in great numbers for this six-day series.”

The series aligns with Kenya’s broader tourism strategy, leveraging its reputation as a global leader in long-distance running. John Ololtua, Principal Secretary for Tourism, noted the dual benefits of promoting Kenya’s natural beauty while fostering local talent and boosting the economies of host counties.

Jackson Tuwei, President of Athletics Kenya, underscored the role of these events as platforms for training and selections for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.

The series is expected to:

  • Attract international sports enthusiasts, drawing attention to Kenya’s landscapes.
  • Promote domestic tourism by encouraging local participation and attendance.
  • Stimulate local economies through increased demand for accommodation, transport and other services.

The initiative also supports the Kenya Adventure Tourism Product Club, which unites public and private stakeholders in positioning Kenya as a global adventure destination. By integrating sports and adventure tourism, the series showcases Kenya’s unique offerings and underscores its potential as a hub for sports and travel.
