The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has concluded arrangements to hold 2-days entertainment and an epoch making event tagged “Sweet Sixty” to commemorate this year’s Diamond Jubilee of Nigeria on the 30th of September and October 1st respectively.
According to a statement signed by Ayo Afuwape, Public Affairs Officer, Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, the event which will be a hybrid of virtual and physical would feature a blend of household names in the entertainment industry like Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, Victor Uwaifo, Onyeka Onwenu as well as some young and talented entertainers including Ali Baba, Kenny Blaq, DJ Neptune, DJ Kaywise, DJ BigN.
Explaining the rationale behind the celebration on Wednesday at Alausa, Ikeja during a press conference heralding the celebration, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Pharmacist (Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf explained that the intention of the State Government is to use the celebration to celebrate musical icons who have been at the forefront of promoting One and indivisible Nigeria for the past decades with their lyrics while also allowing the young entertainers to learn from them and draw inspirations that will impart the present generation.
She said that despite the fact that plans are being made by the federal government to mark this significant milestone, the celebration in Lagos State Government is also very momentous, being a former federal seat of power.
According to her, the fact that Lagos State serves as the melting pot for tradition and culture, where this unique blend is celebrated, strengthened, and beautifully promoted worldwide with tourism attractions that has earned the Nation a global voice and respect, makes the involvement of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in this celebration very unique and quite instructive.
She said though the celebration has been planned to be solemn in view of the prevailing covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry is bringing a blend of entertainment into the celebration as a way of inspiring the mood of the country and remind Nigerians that “we are stronger together and that the minimal effect of the covid 19 on us as a nation underscores our resilience and the divine grace that has been sufficient for us all these years.”
She informed that the Ministry will be extending invitation to renowned Social Clubs in Lagos State whose social gatherings had be interrupted since the advent of covid-19 pandemic, saying that the event will give them a sense of belonging while also reliving the memories of the good old days.
“Let me state categorically that we are mindful of the prevailing covid-19 among us and as such the event would be streamed live on Lagos State Government Social Media Platforms as well as on Television Stations for wider participation by members of the public while invitation would only be extended to a very few individuals in compliance with the State Government’s existing guidelines for social gatherings,” the Commissioner clarified.
Speaking specifically on the two days event, the Commissioner stated that “the 2-days event would be hosted by the Ministry in conjunction with Fly Africa, an independent organization to celebrate the Independence anniversary in an event called the Sweet Sixty.
This year’s Independence Day presents a unique platform to spark the conscience of Nigerians and make the dream of a new Nigeria a mainstream sentiment and a real possibility.”
“This celebration will be a mix of the old and young musicians. The event will also feature some Grade A Musical Artists, World famous Ali Baba, Kenny Blaq, DJ Neptune, DJ Kaywise, DJ BigN, some Nollywood celebrities and Dance Groups are billed to perform at this event that will be a packed 12 hours entertainment, beginning from 12noon to 12midnight to usher in October 1st in a grand style.
“The main Independence event happening on 1st of October will be held at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere for wider participation by members of the public,” the Commissioner stated.
She disclosed that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babjide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will graciously attend the two days event as a way of demonstrating is interest to the promotion of Entertainment being one of the pillars of his THEMES agenda.
According to the Managing Director of Fly Africa, Mr. Wole Olagundoye the partnering organization for the event, the plan of “Sweet Sixty” is to lead a new narrative of an emerging Nigeria, inspired to taking positive action and achieving great feats.
He said, leveraging the Independence Day through the “Sweet Sixty” event, Fly Africa will have the Guinness World Record adjudicating this event that will be celebrating Nigeria’s 60th Anniversary in a truly record-breaking style.
