The President of the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), Bolaji Mustapha, has called for stronger partnerships, innovation and enhanced capacity building among tour operators to unlock Nigeria’s vast tourism potential and drive sustainable destination development.

Speaking at the 10th Annual General Meeting and Conference of NATOP in Lagos, Mustapha said Nigeria possesses abundant natural attractions, diverse cultures and rich historical heritage capable of positioning the country among the world’s leading tourism destinations, but stressed that realizing this potential requires collective action from industry stakeholders.

Welcoming members and participants to the annual gathering, he described the conference as an opportunity to celebrate the growth of the association as well as the resilience, innovation and commitment of stakeholders working to advance tourism in Nigeria.

“It is with immense pleasure and a profound sense of purpose that I welcome you to another Annual General Meeting and Conference of the National Association of Tour Operators,” she said. “As we gather once again, we celebrate not only the growth of our association but also the resilience, innovation and unwavering commitment of every stakeholder dedicated to advancing tourism in Nigeria.”

Mustapha noted that this year’s conference theme, “Unlocking Nigeria’s Tourism Potential: Strengthening Tour Operators for Sustainable Destination Development,” reflects the industry’s shared vision for the future.

According to her, while Nigeria is endowed with extraordinary tourism assets, unlocking their full value requires more than promoting attractions.

“Unlocking this potential requires more than showcasing our assets—it demands stronger partnerships, innovation and a collective commitment to sustainable destination development,” she said.

The NATOP president emphasized the strategic role of tour operators in the tourism value chain, describing them as key contributors to economic development rather than mere service providers.

“As tour operators, we are more than service providers; we are storytellers, destination ambassadors and drivers of economic growth,” Mustapha said. “Every itinerary we design, every destination we promote and every visitor we welcome contributes to job creation, community development, cultural preservation and national prosperity.”

She stressed that strengthening the capacity and professionalism of tour operators is essential to building competitive, inclusive and sustainable destinations that can benefit future generations.

Mustapha also urged participants to use the conference as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, encouraging meaningful engagement throughout the sessions.

She called on stakeholders to exchange ideas, explore practical solutions and embrace innovation that would strengthen Nigeria’s tourism industry while preserving the country’s cultural and environmental heritage.

“Let this gathering inspire new collaborations, encourage innovation and reinforce our commitment to delivering exceptional tourism experiences while preserving the unique heritage and environment that make Nigeria truly remarkable,” she said.

The annual conference brought together tour operators, tourism professionals and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for expanding Nigeria’s tourism industry and promoting sustainable destination development across the country.
