Africa: Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and Immigration Service Launch Awareness Drive on E-Visa and Border Control Reforms

In a joint move to enhance border efficiency and traveler experience, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) held a comprehensive sensitization session in Lagos to promote the implementation of the e-visa system, as well as digital landing and exit cards.

The initiative marks a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s immigration processes and aligning with global aviation standards.

The aim of the  one-day stakeholders’ sensitization was with the aim to modernize Nigeria’s border control procedures, enhance the traveller experience, strengthen border security, and position Nigeria as an attractive destination for tourists and investors.

In his welcome remarks, Capt. Chris Najomo, Director-General of the NCAA, highlighted the significance of collaborating with the NIS in implementing the e-visa system and digital landing and exit cards, marking a significant step in modernizing travel and border management in Nigeria.

While noting that the e-visa aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 9 standards, the NCAA boss commended the Ministry of Interior, the Immigration Service, and other partners for their efforts in this digital transformation.

Delivering his keynote address, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, disclosed that the NIS has upgraded its border management capabilities with the introduction of a fully digitalized e-visa system, and a mandatory landing and exit card for non-Nigerian travellers. This advancement, according to the minister, is aimed at ensuring Nigeria remains competitive with global counterparts.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo further stated that the NIS and NCAA are working together to enhance verification processes for airlines, thereby ensuring secure and efficient travel through Nigerian borders.

Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, who was represented by the General Manager, Operations, Mrs. Joke Olatunji, and Mr. Samson Fatokun from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) expressed full support for the digital immigration initiative and pledged collaboration with the NIS and NCAA to ensure its successful implementation, and contribution to national progress.
