The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a ₦5 million fine on Qatar Airways for violations related to consumer protection, marking a firm regulatory move aimed at safeguarding passenger rights across the country’s aviation sector.
This was made know by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at the NCAA, on his official x account.
He also confirmed that the sanction was issued following the airline’s failure to comply with established consumer protection standards.
Achimugu stated that, beyond the fine, the authority has also issued Letters of Investigation (LOI) to Qatar Airways regarding additional unresolved complaints. These cases, he noted, could result in further penalties if the airline’s responses do not meet regulatory expectations.
“The NCAA has sanctioned Qatar Airways to the tune of five million naira being penalty for consumer protection-related infractions,” Achimugu said.
“Letters of investigation written to the airline over other cases may lead to further sanctions if not treated satisfactorily.”
He reaffirmed the NCAA’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment for passengers and strict compliance by airlines operating in Nigeria.
“As always, the NCAA is committed to protecting the rights of all stakeholders,” he added.
The enforcement action signals the regulator’s continued readiness to hold both domestic and international airlines accountable for lapses affecting Nigerian travelers.
