In another remarkable demonstration of its unwavering commitment to wildlife protection and biodiversity conservation, five White-bellied Pangolins were successfully released back into their natural habitat on Saturday, 31st October, 2026, at Erokut Base Camp.

‎The pangolins, were intercepted from wildlife traffickers who engage in illegal wildlife trade; a criminal enterprise that continues to threaten the survival of some of the world’s most endangered and heavily trafficked wildlife species, by officers of the Nigeria Customs Service attached to the Ikeja and Ogun I Commands.

‎Following their recovery and the necessary conservation arrangements, the animals were transferred for rehabilitation and eventual reintroduction into a suitable forest habitat within Cross River National Park.

‎The release exercise was conducted on behalf of the Conservator General by CP Joseph Assam Ntui, alongside 3 others. With great care and a deep sense of responsibility, the five pangolins were returned to the forest at Erokut Base Camp, giving them another opportunity to live freely in their natural environment.

‎The White-bellied Pangolin, scientifically known as Phataginus tricuspis, is one of Africa’s most vulnerable mammalian species and faces increasing threats from illegal hunting, trafficking and habitat destruction. Its ecological importance cannot be overstated, particularly its role in controlling ant and termite populations, thereby contributing to the health and balance of forest ecosystems.

‎This successful release underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration in combating wildlife trafficking and protecting Nigeria’s natural heritage. Speaking to newsmen after the reintroduction, CP Joseph Assam Ntui, commended the CG for creating an enabling environment for the collaboration with Nigeria Customs Service, Greenfingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative , Focused Conservation , Wildlife Conservation Society and other stakeholders in the fight against wildlife trafficking. He emphasized that the fight against illegal wildlife trade requires collective vigilance, effective law enforcement and sustained institutional cooperation.

‎Five lives rescued. Five pangolins returned to nature. One stronger commitment to conservation!
