A report by CNN has ranked women in Nigeria to be Africa’s top users of skin-whitening creams and lightening products.
Also referred to as bleaching in Nigeria, skin whitening is the use of cosmetic products or services to reduce the amount of melanin in the skin to make it appear lighter.
According to the data, 75 percent of Nigerian women patronise whitening products. Coming second place is Senegal with 60 percent, Mali (50 percent) and Ghana at 30 percent.
According to The Punch, CNN was investigating skin whitening practices worldwide as part of a series titled ‘White Lies’.
The series is aimed at exposing the underlying drivers of colorism, the industry that profits from it and the cost to individuals and communities, it added. PUNCH HealthWise had in the past reported experts’ advice against skin whitening, citing some health hazards associated with the act.
PUNCH HealthWise had reported that a Consultant Family Physician and Dermatologist, Dr. Wey George had cautioned against skin whitening creams. George had said that health hazards associated with bleaching are far more than the advantages, noting that It can lead to death.
“In Nigeria, you find out that almost all the people bleaching do not consult a dermatologist to know what suits their skin.
“This is because they cannot afford the money or they are ignorant; therefore, such persons run into trouble with all sorts of skin infections,” the medical doctor said.
