Following operational challenges facing cargo handlers across Nigerian airports, the Domestic Airport Cargo Agents Association (DACAA), has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action on airport cargo infrastructure deficiencies.
According to Radio Nigeria, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Sir. John Ekeanya emphasized the vital role DACAA plays in the national economy and urged policymakers to incorporate their expertise in national economic planning.
He stressed that, airport cargo agents face substantial hurdles, particularly concerning infrastructure and policy inclusion and specifically pointed to the need for improved cargo processing and storage structures at airports. “Cargo processing and storage structures in all airports should be considered, including but not limited to availability of storage facilities, cold rooms, weighing equipment, screening machines, etc.”. One of the primary concerns raised by the newly appointed president, Mr. Godwin Obasuyi is the lack of a permanent operational space for DACAA members, which has forced them to operate under difficult conditions without government support.
He revealed that its members handle between 70 to 80 tons of cargo per week, stressing that the revenue generated from port charges and cargo operations should not be overlooked, urging the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other stakeholders to address the challenges faced by cargo agents. “We need the help of the authorities’ concern and government to alleviate our long suffering and neglect overtime. We move from place to place on our own without any assistance”. from the government We will continue to engage the authorities in conversation to this regard.
“We have contributed immensely to the labour force and provide essential services across the nation. Yet, we have suffered neglect for too long. It is time for authorities to recognize our efforts and support us with the necessary infrastructure to ensure smooth operations.” He appealed to FAAN and relevant aviation authorities to intervene by providing a conducive and stable work environment to enhance efficiency and sustain their contributions to the industry. The grand patron of the association, Dr Lucky Omokhodion, while urging the new executive to build on the achievements of the past and take DACAA to greater heights, called for healing and reconciliation as the association transitions to a new executive leadership.
He also called for unity and cooperation among DACAA members, as the association embarks on a new chapter in its history. Highlights of the event was the presentation of awards to Dr. Omokhodion for his immerse contribution to building the association to the heights it is today.
