Africa: Türkiye-Nigeria Partnership Flourishes, As Envoy Hails Nigeria’s Ascendance As An African Power

The Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Nigeria, Mr. Hidayet Bayraktar, lauded Nigeria’s status as a rising power in Africa, attributing it to the country’s vast population and robust economy.

According to guardian.ng, the envoy made these remarks during the anniversary festivities held in Abuja, emphasizing the longstanding and evolving relationship between Türkiye and Nigeria.

Bayraktar highlighted the enduring ties between the two nations, dating back to 1960, and underscored the foundation of their relationship on friendship and mutual benefits. He pointed out the significant mutual visits made by President Tayyip Erdoğan and former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021, marking a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

During these high-level visits, both leaders expressed a dedication to reinforcing partnerships in various fields. Bayraktar expressed optimism about building and enhancing Türkiye’s collaboration with the newly established Nigerian government after the elections in February.

Recognizing the shared challenges faced by Nigeria and its immediate region, such as terrorism and organized crime, Bayraktar affirmed Türkiye’s support for Nigeria’s efforts in combating these issues. He stressed the international significance of these challenges, urging friendly and brotherly nations, including Nigeria, to demonstrate solidarity in the fight against terrorist organizations.

Beyond the fight against terrorism, the envoy highlighted the positive trajectory of bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Türkiye and Nigeria. He noted the improvement in cooperation in the defense industry, mentioning a recent visit by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, to Türkiye. During the visit, discussions centered around ongoing collaborations, including the cooperation on T-129 ATAK helicopters and other defense industry deals.

Bayraktar expressed satisfaction with the progress in defense industry cooperation, including the development of Offshore Patrol Vessels. The envoy’s remarks showcased the deepening partnership between Türkiye and Nigeria, affirming the belief in continued collaboration and solidarity to address shared challenges and promote mutual development.
