The “Stopover” tourist project, which aims to allow tourists in transit through Angolan airports to get to know other areas of the country, was presented on Tuesday in Luanda in a joint effort between the Institute of Tourism Promotion (Infotur) and Angolan flagship air carrier TAAG, the local press reported.
The project has two schemes, one of which is free and allows for two destinations on the same trip for the price of one, with visitors entitled to a few days in the city that connects them to their final destination.
The paid option allows stops in transit for longer than 24 hours to get know local regions and tourist sites but paying a lower amount for including more flights in the travel route, according to Angolan news agency Angop.
This project is due to come into force in 2020, with officials from the Tourism Development Institute (Infotur) and TAAG meeting on Tuesday with private operators from the tourism sector and public entities, whose corporate purpose is to focus on tourism, to publicise the new scheme.
Infotur director Simão Pedro said the “Stopover” project aims to increase tourism revenue and passenger numbers by at least 5.0%, in addition to consumption of goods and other tourist services.
Pedro also said that the internal tourist destinations selected for this project, without ruling out other destinations preferred by tour operators, are the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Huila, Namibe, Malanje, Zaire and Kwando Kubango.
In terms of issuing countries, that is, whose tourists travel most to Angola for tourism or in transit and who can make use of the “Stopover” scheme, the director of Infotur pointed to South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, China, Brazil, USA, France and the United Kingdom.
TAAG Commercial Director Carlos Von Hafe said the company was due to launch a campaign to promote international tourism and said it included the “Stopover” scheme.
