The sex robots age has arrived. The first brothel that serves only dolls for sex opened and closed abruptly in Barcelona. It met with swift and sturdy resistance by sex workers, the Spanish police and concerned citizens.
According to Spanish newspaper El País, their drama was epic.
Barcelona’s police force began investigating the legality of the establishment. However, when the authorities tried to carry out a routine inspection they discovered that the business had since moved out of the premises.
According to the Spanish newspaper, the owner of the property canceled Lumidolls’ tenancy on the grounds that they didn’t know what the property was being used for until they saw it from pictures on the Internet. After putting a call to the brothel, the Spanish newspaper was told that only paying customers would be informed of the new location.
Prostitutes who work in the city with Aprosex – the Association of Sex Professionals – objected saying a doll cannot match the services of a real person and belittles real sex workers to merely being an object.
A statement on their website reads: “The sex-affection of a person cannot be provided by a doll. They are different and compatible services. They do not communicate. “They do not listen to you or caress you; they do not comfort you or look at you. They do not give you their opinion or drink a glass of champagne with you.”
Lumidolls – a pun on a Spanish slang for prostitute – is believed to be the first of such brothel to open in Europe after similar venues in places like Japan and China were hugely popular. The dolls cost around £4,300 (€5,000) each to make and for as little as £100 an hour, customers can choose from one of four busty and flexible silicone dolls and request that they be dressed in whatever sexy outfit they prefer. Made from thermoplastic elastomer, the realistic dolls have three openings.
The skeleton frame is made out of bendable metal rods that allow flexibility so the dolls can be moved into almost any sexual position.
According to Lumidoll’s website: “These are totally realistic dolls, both in the movement of their joints to the touch of their skin that will allow you to fulfill all your fantasies.” Gina, the woman handling the company’s publicity, said that the dolls are cleaned and disinfected after every use and customers are advised to use a condom and provided with a tube of lubricant.
According to the website, appointments can also be made for entire nights or for couples. This is coming months after US California-based company Abyss Creations stated that next year they will start marketing sex robots that are billed as life-like, with the ability to talk and move like humans.
