Kenyan tourism industry stakeholders have welcomed the establishment of a Tourism and Wildlife Ministry.

Initially, wildlife was listed under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Mohamed Hersi, chairman, Kenya Tourism Federation National, expressed that the push for tourism and wildlife to be under one ministry had been ongoing for a while.

Sam Ikwaye, coast branch executive officer, Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers, outlined that tourism and wildlife are designed to function together.

“That is how we managed to push tourism to where it is as a country for over 50 years before the Tourism Act was enacted. It was easy to manage the resources,” added Ikwaye.

Victor Shitakah, chairman, Kenya Coast Tourist Association, said the move to put tourism and wildlife together was long overdue. “Kenya has more to offer in terms of its unmatched tourism attractions, which include flora and fauna,” concluded Shitakah.
