President John Dramani Mahama has officially opened two flyovers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. According to the President, the commissioning of the two flyovers would help bring considerable relief to commuters on the Nsawam-Accra corridor. Work on the flyovers that link the Akasanoma Road to the Nsawam Road – opposite the Vodafone building – and the other one which links the Nsawam Road to the Nkrumah Avenue – in front of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) building – have been completed. The project, which started two years ago, has compelled Queiroz Galvao Construction – the contractor – to create a number of diversions and relocations to ease traffic in the area.

“As you can see the third flyover is being laid out with various connecting loops. Work is progressing on schedule on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange and a new statue of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, a beautiful fountain, a police post, new lorry parks and greenery would also be ready before the middle of 2016,” President Mahama said. He added that the opening of the road would also enable the contractor to move some of the traffic onto the two flyovers and create space to concentrate on the rest of the construction. The 74.88 million Euro three-tier interchange project was being funded with a loan from the Brazilian Government.

“To further address the issue of congestion and improve capacity of the roads in other parts of the city to take the great volume of traffic, we are instituting other projects   including the rehabilitation within the Accra West corridor. It would include the El-Wak road from the 37 Military Hospital to La Beach as well as the Burma Camp road to Teshie,” he said. President Mahama, together with Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Mayor and Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia, National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary among others, inspected the road after the opening ceremony.
