Kenya’s Coastal airspace is attracting more airlines keen to have a bigger bite of the tourism sector.

The airlines are eyeing both Moi and Malindi airports as well as other airstrips located in tourism hubs such as Diani.

The latest entry is low-cost carrier, Silverstone Air which introduced daily morning flights from Kenya’s tourism hub of Mombasa to Nairobi early this month.

Silverstone Air sales manager, Mr Patrick Oketch told Shipping $ Logistics that the carrier is focusing on promoting domestic tourism.

“Mombasa which is a potential import and tourism hub needs efficient, convenient and affordable transport system,” he said in an interview. Mr Oketch said they are charging an introductory Sh4,600 for one-way ticket between Nairobi and Mombasa.

In August, another low-cost airline, Fly Tristar, launched its early morning three-day flights – Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays – between Wilson and Mombasa’s Moi airports. Fly Tristar commercial director Ken Wadhwa said the launch is to “complement the market and demystify air travel” as it is perceived as an extremely expensive mode of transport.

“But our prices have guaranteed seats of Sh4,333 one way. Mombasa is a gateway town, where cruise ships dock and international airlines like Condor, bring in visitors,” he said. Tourism industry players, governors and residents have lauded the airlines for introducing new airlines in the region saying they are offering affordable means of fast transport.

During the launch of the Silverstone flight in Mombasa, Governor Ali Hassan Joho said the morning direct flights connecting the two largest cities (Nairobi and Mombasa) are a big boost for the county.

“Investments such as this gives Kenyans an opportunity to explore their country. As a destination, Mombasa requires logistical support from investments such as this one,” Mr Joho said.
