A social media post questioning whether India’s nightlife is limited to just bars and clubs has reignited an online debate about quality of life comparisons between India and countries like Malaysia, Canada, the UK, and the UAE.
According to indianexpress.com, shared by an Indian user reflecting on their experience abroad, the post has drawn a flood of opinions from expatriates and locals, highlighting differing perspectives on lifestyle, leisure, and urban living.
These discussions often ignite diverse opinions based on differences in infrastructure, healthcare, work-life balance, and overall lifestyle.
Shardul, a UX designer, has sparked a fresh debate on X after he shared a lengthy post that Malaysia offers a better life than India. He began by highlighting that India doesn’t have quality nightlife. “One extremely important experience missing in India is Nightlife. Nightlife doesnt simply mean bars or clubs. It means third spaces open for families and friends alike throughout the night.
Below is a video from Malaysia from a man-made lake during a late night walk,” he wrote.
He shared that many people went out for fishing or simply sat relaxing by the lake.
Sharing an anecdote from his time in India, Shardul revealed that he was yelled at by the police and asked to go back home when he stepped out late in Bengaluru. “When there is no safety guarantee, you won’t find people daring to do what I tried, especially when the ones supposed to guarantee your safety are telling you to go away,” he added.
The post quickly went viral, accumulating nearly a million views. It also sparked a debate as several social media users disagreed with Shardul. “Walk down the Kozhikode beach and you will find families even at 11 pm,” a user wrote.
“In a country where most cities do not even have a pavement to walk on, not just nightlife but daylife is also missing. No comparison with most countries. One doesn’t even need to go as far as Malaysia. Sri Lanka itself is refreshing,” another user commented.
“our current struggle is to get the basics right these fancy things can come when that’s done,” a third user reacted.
