At a time when the entire globe is almost on a lock down due to the raging coronavirus disease, a Nigerian firm Germbusters.ng has introduced dry vapor steam as an effective way of eliminating germs, bacteria and pathogens in homes, work spaces and environment.
According to the CEO of Inspire Group, the parent company of Germbusters.ng, Magnus Onyibe, the vapor steam system was adopted from the USA where it is widely used particularly because it is chemical free and eco-friendly.
“When we set up the business about a year ago, the idea was to support Govt in its public health safety initiative. That’s especially because of the outbreak of the horrific Ebola epidemic about ten years ago which left in its trail very high fatalities arising from extreme lifestyles of eating bats and monkeys as well as poor hygiene of some Africans . When we introduced it we had no idea that there is going to be coronavirus pandemic but here we are faced with the grim reality.
When we were in elementary school, we learnt that when heat water to a boiling point all the germs in the water will be killed.
We grew up with that belief not learning further that when the water that has reached boiling point is turned into dry vapor, if becomes a natural disinfectant.
So in line with the effects of global warming which is caused by the extensive use of chemicals like germicides and herbicides, the introduction of dry steam vapor to disinfect or sterilize germ and bacteria infested spaces of environments , which is eco-friendly is a welcome development,” the CEO, Magnus Onyibe said in a statement.
Until recently, most Nigerians believed that garbage or refuse collection was the responsibility of govt hence they initially resisted paying for refuse disposal when states like lagos state pioneered PSPs or waste collection and disposal by organizations in the private sector for a fee.
Similarly, some Nigerians are still under the illusion that it is solely Govt’s duty to drive public health safety.
We at Germbusters.ng think differently hence we ventured into the space.
Germbusters.ng is leveraging two cutting edge technological devices which are (1)the optima steamer with Korean and USA origin which uses dry vapor steam- natural disinfectant to kill germs and (2) the Lumitester hygiene monitoring tool which is made in Japan and is like a mobile laboratory used to detect bacteria load in an environment in a matter of seconds.
We carry out our service by deploying the skills of well trained health technicians in complimenting Govt’s initiative of promoting public health safety through the elimination of water and food borne pathogens in unhygienic environments that cause diseases that could lead to national epidemics such as flu and Lassa fever as well as global pandemics like coronavirus.
Our original intention when we set up operations about a year ago was to support Govt efforts in reducing, if not eliminating common diseases such dysentery, typhoid , diarrhea etc in Nigeria especially amongst the critical mass of our people that are vulnerable .
And Germbusters has been carrying out the function by killing germs and bacteria in hospitals, laboratories, hotel rooms and kitchens as well food factories, pharmaceutical plants and table water production facilities through sterilization and sanitization thus keeping Nigerians safe.
But we extended it to schools when there was flu outbreak which first created a scare in Queens college yaba, lagos.
Our steamer removes bacteria without the use of harsh chemicals such as dettol, bleach, izal etc which is currently the common practice.
The dry vapor steam from optima steamer which is a natural disinfectant reaches into the most stubborn cracks and crevices in kitchens and factory equipments.
Our steamer also demolishes grime build up in factory machines leaving the area spotless and germs free.
Conventionally, to detect the pathogen or bacteria load in an environment, swabs of the identified location are taken to the laboratory for culture and sensitivity. But with our high tech lumitester , which is like a mobile laboratory, we detect instantly the number of bacteria in the facilities or spaces after taking swabs with our Lucipac pen which is inserted into the Lumitester to produce test results instantly. It is revolutionary because ordinarily the swabs taken from an identified object would be taken to the laboratory for testing before culture and sensitivity is carried out for at least 48 hours or even a week.
For instance, when we carried out a test using our Lumitester hygiene monitoring device at lagoon hospital recently, and we showed them instantly the test result which confirmed a heavy pathogen load in the environment that we tested , the nurses and other medics were staggered when they discovered how toxic the environment they were working in was.
We have made presentations to the forum of CEOs of Pharmaceutical firms as well as association of medical doctors and other health practitioners, lagos state chapter and they were quite enthusiastic and excited about the benefit of our services.
Owing to the revolutionary and positive changes that our services have introduced into the public health safety space in Nigeria , a handful of hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceutical firms are currently enjoying our services or in negotiations with Germbusters.ng on how to obtain their services.
We are in negotiations with Reddinton hospital, lagoon hospital , eko hospital, OMNI fertility hospital as well as Saint Nicholas hospital amongst many others now using our services or in the process of doing so.
We have also been engaging with Eko hotel, Sheraton, Raddison blu, Federal palace hotel, Intercontinental hotel as well as Oriental hotel to mention just a few.
Our services are popular particularly because we offer retail services so that small and medium scale organizations that can’t afford the heavy capital out lay ( a few millions) to acquire the devices, would not miss out on the benefits. So our team go out on a weekly or monthly basis to the various identified facilities to sterilize either their equipments or work spaces.
On the other hand firms that can afford to purchase the Lumitester and optima steamer machines such as large pharmaceutical firms, breweries or hospitals , hotels and school chains also do so, and we train their people on how to handle the equipment at no cost to them.
When we decided to set up Germbusters.ng :by Inspire Consulting Ltd, it was a social investment. And we were inspired to help Govt agencies like NAFDAC and NCDC reduce the incidence of common diseases earlier listed.
We never anticipated the outbreak of the various viruses that are currently alarmingly ravaging large human populations all over the world.
We were motivated to venture into public health safety arena simply because we were appalled by the devastating effect that Ebola had on Africans and vowed never again to standby while unhygienic practices of cohabitating with rodents which are vectors for Lassa fever and eating strange animals like bats and monkeys suspected to be the causes of Ebola which caused so much Human Resources on the continent of Africa.
What ignited our interest was when we saw some ex school mates in the USA founding and operating such business in the public health safety space out there. So we decided to take a cue by obtaining the franchise with a view to adopting and introducing the system in Nigeria.
What really got us convinced about investing in such social service was when l was taken to a crèche to witness how popular sterilization of the facilities as well as baby car seats with dry steam vapor which is a natural disinfectant is.
One was amazed at how mothers who were picking up or dropping off their kids were excited to sterilize their baby seats in their cars for just $10.
They were comfortable with the sterilization process because it was chemical free and therefore harmless to their precious kids which is unlike the traditional process of disinfecting with izal, bleach, etc of which they have to wash off before use in order to wipe off the chemical effects and which is quite laborious.
At present we are still attending to our primary target market such as hospitals, laboratories hotels , and food and pharmaceutical production firms and we yet to extend our services to airlines that need to sterilize their cabins and lounges in the arrival and departure halls of airport terminals as we are currently witnessing on global tv across the world .
With the current pandemic we are looking at offering our services to banks and other financial institutions that need to protect their workforces and customers who are constantly interacting with members of the public in the various transaction halls. Banking groups which are, at least 30 in number and spread out across Nigeria with multiple branches and banking halls , are potential virus contact points so they need to sterilize their halls . We have seen banks such as Gtbank giving out masks to their staff and we have also seen churches like MFM dispensing hand sanitizers to worshipers in Sunday which are very good gestures to save lives but such measures are not enough.
The need to sterilize workspaces regularly as a further measure to contain the coronavirus now spreading like wildfire can not be over emphasized and that’s our mission: to kill bacteria and viruses before they kill us by keeping our environment safe through sterilization and sanitization.
Germbusters.ng is a registered trademark in Nigeria and we applied for endorsement of our services to both NAFDAC and NCDC as soon as we commenced operations roughly ten months ago . But typical of Nigerian Govt agencies, they are yet to invite us for a demonstration of our services even though they have verbally acknowledged the efficacy of our revolutionary services which is aimed at complementing their job.
