Africa: Nigeria Customs seizures hit N32.8 bn in 2019- Comptroller

The total number of prohibited items seized by Nigerian Customs Service in 2019 was recorded at 4,599 which worth about N32.83bn .This is according to a report by punching.com.

According to the report, the Comptroller -General of Customs, Col Hameed Ali(rtd), had disclosed this during an event commemorating the 2020 International Customs Day in Abuja.

The Customs boss said the seizure was made up of counterfeit items, food and other prohibited items harmful to the society.

“The service has been passionate about the protection of national security and economy on the discharge of its functions. Our modest achievements in 2019 were the collection of the historic N1.34tn revenue; the seizure of prohibited articles of trade comprising food, counterfeits and others harmful to our environment valued at N32.83bn during 4,599 incidents in 2019.This is another remarkable contribution of the NCS” he added.

The report further disclosed that the command had intercepted illegal cash flows through the airports.

It would be recalled that the nation’s borders have been closed for over a year and crippling smuggling activities around the country’s land borders. This, the CG said “We are still working with them (neighbouring countries). There are some parameters and we have reached certain understanding through so many refining of some things. We need a process and situation whereby our border is secure and we are guaranteed that the menace that we are experiencing in our border will no longer be there”.

The Secretary General, World Customs Organisation, Dr Kunio Mikuriya in his speech delivered by Deputy Comptroller -General, Strategic Research and Policy, Ronke Olubiyi said the world body would harmonize the methods and practices of the Nigeria Customs with the global template.
