OAG Aviation has published its punctuality report for 2020, highlighting the airlines with the best on-time records around the world.
The report is based on 57.5 million flight records from 2019, creating a ranking of the best on-time performances (OTP) for the world’s largest airlines.
The best airline in the world is Garuda Indonesia which managed to operate 19 of every 20 flights on-time across the whole of 2019.
That is 95% of flights arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time. For an airline which operates 35% of flights out of the congested Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at Jakarta this is some achievement.
Copa Airlines was ranked second in the world in 2019, having raised its on-time performance to 92% across the year.
Best in South Africa
Looking at a regional level, low-cost carrier Safair was named as the airline with best OTP score in Africa and the Middle-East.
This is a considerable achievement considering it faces competition from major airlines such as Emirates and Etihad.
OAG’s data shows that 95% of FlySafair’s flights arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.
South African Airways
Travel data and analytics expert Cirium also published its list of on-time mainline airlines, with Russia’s Aeroflot named as the world’s most on-time mainline airline.
According to Cirium, by size and region, 86.7% of Aeroflot’s flights operated on-time in 2019. Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) came in second place with 86.3% of its flights on time.
Last year’s winner, Delta Air Lines, took third place in the global category with 85.7% of flights arriving on-time but topped the ranking in the North America category in both mainline and network.
Under fire airline, South African Airways featured strongly in the mainline category for the Middle East and Africa region in the report. SAA placed fourth, with on-time arrivals at 79.38% and an average delay of 32 minutes.
