Spiritualists defraud househelp of N11 million jewellery

A 20-year-old househelp, Promise Mbagu, has told an Ikeja magistrates court 1 , how she was defrauded her master’s jewellery valued N11 million. Mbagu according to Investigating Police Officer, IPO, Inspector Austin Imagbe, was detained at Maroko Police station Lagos before her case was transferred to State Anti-Robbery Squad formation in Ikeja. Upon Investigation, it was discovered that Mbaguwas employed by one Mr. Owolabi Awosan living at No.7B Durosimi Etti , Lekki phase 1, in Lagos. She was trusted and given free hands in her employer’s house. Sometimes she travels abroad with the family for businesses. Mbagu narrated how she was accosted at the road, on her way to Oshodi by a three- man gang, who told her she had spiritual problem implanted in her face, chest and abdomen.

The unidentified trio who are still at large told her to be certain of her spiritual problem , they would make her to push out a stone through her vagina. It was alleged that after the magical performance, and Mbagu ejected a stone-like substance from her private part. she agreed with the fraudsters that she had spiritual problems. She was then asked to go back to the house of her employer and bring all the money and valuables she could lay hands upon to pay for her exorcism.

The unsuspecting girl went back to her Awosan’s house and stole two diamond wrist watches and two golden chains worth N11 million naira. Upon handing over the valuables, the fraudsters fled. Awosan had reported the matter to Maroko police station who transferred the case to Ikeja SARS. Upon arraignment, Prosecutor Friday Mame who stood in for Inspector Peter Nwagu told the court that the defendant, Mbagu has committed an act of stealing punishable under section 409, of the criminal laws of Lagos.

Defence counsel, simply known as Akin pleaded the court to grand the defendant bail on most liberal of terms. Magistrate, Mrs. Y.O Aje-Afunwa granted Mbagu bail in the sum of N700,0000 with two sureties and verifiable addresses, she adjourned the case till 20th, July, 2016.
