Africa: The Guardian’s Oyebade wins best doctoral thesis award at UNILAG


ASSISTANT Transport and Tourism Editor of The Guardian, Wole Oyebade, has won the best doctoral thesis award in humanities at the ongoing 50th convocation of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos.

Oyebade, among other awardees, will be recognised at today’s congregation for the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, conferment of distinguished professorship, emeritus professorship and honorary doctorates.

Also to be honoured is Ayodele Ajibade of the Department of Metallurgical and Material Engineering. Ajibade won the best doctoral thesis award in Sciences/Engineering and the overall best thesis for the 2017/2018 graduating set.

Oyebade, from the Philosophy Department, Faculty of Arts, researched in the area of African ethics, specifically, character ethics, with doctoral thesis titled: “A Comparative Analysis of the Concepts of Omoluabi in Yoruba Moral Theory and Aristotle’s Magnanimous Man in Nicomachean Ethics.”

He was supervised by Professor of African Philosophy and Head of the Philosophy Department, Godwin Azenabor and senior lecturer at the department, Dr. Olufunmilayo Kehinde.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, at a pre-convocation press briefing said no fewer than 150 Ph.D. degrees would be awarded at this year’s convocation, with a total of 4, 771 master’s degrees and 484 postgraduate diploma holders.

“The best Ph.D. thesis in science would be awarded to Ayodele Ajibade of the Department of Metallurgical and Material Engineering, while Oyewole Oyebade of the Department of Philosophy, will receive best thesis award for Humanities,” Ogundipe said.

Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS), Prof. S. O. Akinboye, at the first hooding ceremony for the graduands yesterday said the research qualities of the graduands were not in doubt, and were most desirable in the Nigerian environment where holding a first degree is no longer sufficient for prime employment.
