Canada has broadened travel opportunities for citizens of 27 African countries under its updated 2026 entry regulations, making it easier for eligible travellers to visit the North American nation.
According to thenationonlineng.net, the move comes as Canada’s passport retains its position among the world’s most powerful travel documents, ranking seventh globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 183 destinations worldwide.
The annual ranking, compiled from International Air Transport Association (IATA) data, is widely regarded as a leading measure of global passport strength and international mobility.
Beyond assessing the travel privileges of Canadian citizens, the index also highlights Canada’s entry policies for foreign nationals. It shows that citizens of 27 African countries can travel to Canada without first obtaining a traditional visitor visa from a Canadian embassy or consulate, provided they qualify under specific entry arrangements.
According to the report, eligible travellers may enter Canada through one of three arrangements: visa-free access, Visa on Arrival or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). While visa-free travellers do not need a pre-departure visa, those requiring an eTA can complete a straightforward online application, which is generally processed faster and with fewer requirements than a standard visitor visa.
The index noted that the simplified arrangements benefit business travellers, tourists and families by reducing travel barriers and processing delays. However, it also underscored the disparity in global travel freedom, as citizens of many other African countries still face the lengthy and often costly process of securing a traditional Canadian visa before travelling.
