As preparations intensify for the 20th edition of Carnival Calabar, the Cross River State Carnival Commission says this year’s event will focus on refinement, precision and global standards rather than expansion.

Austin Cobham, Executive Secretary of the Cross River Carnival Commission, said the landmark edition is being carefully choreographed to deliver a world-class experience by strengthening existing elements of the carnival instead of introducing new ones. Speaking in an interview, Cobham described the 2025 carnival as a celebration of resilience, creativity and the enduring spirit of the people of Cross River State.

According to him, the commission is recalibrating carnival routes to enhance excitement, improve crowd control and boost brand value for sponsors. He noted that the goal is to ensure sponsors derive tangible returns on their investments while audiences enjoy a more engaging and seamless experience.

“This is a unique carnival. It will be an expression of a fulfilled people — people who, after 20 years, have not gone down. It will be an expression of the heart,” Cobham said.

He explained that one of the major differences this year is early planning and timely execution, which he said would significantly improve delivery. With activities already building momentum, Cobham said the carnival has steadily risen in tempo from its opening events and is now approaching what he described as the “power week,” expected to be the highlight of the entire festival.

“If the opening weeks were this strong, then what do you expect from the power week?” he asked, adding that the 20th edition represents a departure from previous conventions. He revealed that the entire carnival route has been properly choreographed to ensure the procession begins and concludes within 10 to 12 hours, improving efficiency and audience satisfaction.

Cobham acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly due to Cross River’s geographical position as a destination rather than a transit route, which requires extra effort to attract visitors. He also pointed to funding constraints, noting that Carnival Calabar is a national event largely financed by a state government, as well as limited corporate support stemming from inadequate awareness of corporate social responsibility opportunities.

Despite these hurdles, he described the experience as rewarding, adding that time constraints are an unavoidable challenge in large-scale event planning.

Reflecting on the past two years under the current administration, Cobham said the working environment has been the most exciting of his career, having served under multiple governments. He praised the leadership style of Governor Bassey Otu, highlighting his openness, humility and willingness to listen across all levels.

“For me, it’s the best time to work in government,” Cobham said. “The climate and atmosphere are very conducive, and that makes effective delivery possible.”

Carnival Calabar, widely regarded as Africa’s biggest street party, is expected to attract thousands of local and international visitors as it marks two decades of cultural celebration and tourism development in Cross River State.
