Africa: Conquering the Majestic Awhum Waterfalls

Awhum Waterfalls

The greatest waterfall of them all: Awhum. Ever since I arrived in Enugu, everyone who heard about my visit asked if I made it to Awhum Falls. It’s a trek that takes about an hour each way, so anyone who has seen the falls is truly determined.

The fall itself is the reward for the perseverance required to reach it.

All the leading tourism personalities rank Awhum Falls as the king of all waterfalls they have seen. The Roman Catholic Church has a monastery at the entrance of the forest complex.

Walking through the monastery leads you into the thick forest groove, and as you reach the beginning of the flood plains, you start threading water through darkened rocks.

Eventually, you reach an open roof area, and voila—there it is. The majestic Awhum Falls drops about 300 feet, revealing hues of orange and yellow walls with long strands of white-water cascading down the high walls. Such beauty, such power, such awesomeness in one small space of natural opulence.

I have finally conquered the great Awhum Waterfalls. Every Nigerian should visit these falls at least once in their lifetime. Nigeria is beautiful, and I have sampled this beauty.
