Egypt is intensifying efforts to attract Nigerian students to its universities as the North African country seeks to expand its international education footprint and strengthen its position as a leading study destination on the continent.
According to africa.businessinsider.com, under the “Study in Egypt” initiative, a specialised promotional mission began activities in Lagos on August 26, 2026, showcasing Egypt’s higher education opportunities to Nigerian students and stakeholders while highlighting the country’s universities, academic programmes and broader appeal as an international study destination.
The week-long campaign, which runs from August 24 to August 30, represents a collaborative effort supervised by Egypt’s ministries of investment and higher education.
The drive aims to increase the country’s service exports by introducing Nigerian youth to the diverse academic opportunities available in Egypt.
Launching the “Study in Egypt” campaign in Nigeria
The promotional tour is designed to establish direct communication lines between Egyptian academic institutions and Nigerian students.
Multiple government organizations are coordinating the event, including the Egyptian General Authority for Exhibitions and Conferences, the Supreme Council of Universities, and the Central Administration for International Students Affairs.

Alaa El-Baily, the chairman of the exhibitions authority, highlighted that the mission is a key component of broader efforts to boost Egyptian service exports and expand into new international markets.
El-Baily explained that the main goal is “to establish direct communication between Egyptian universities, Nigerian students, and educational institutions” and to showcase the unique academic advantages Egypt offers.
Strengthening economic and soft power ties between Egypt and Nigeria
Egyptian officials view higher education as a vital economic asset and a diplomatic tool on the African continent.
Dr. Mohamed Farid, Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, stressed that education is a highly promising area for the nation’s service exports.
Farid noted the critical need for “intensifying promotional efforts in foreign markets, particularly African markets, to raise awareness of the Egyptian higher education system“.
He explained that these efforts are geared toward boosting the competitiveness of Egyptian universities while forging new partnerships with local institutions.
This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Abdel Aziz Qansouh, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, who described the higher education system as “one of the most important sources of Egypt’s soft power”.
Dr. Qansouh added that international students serve as a pillar of this influence while also contributing directly to the domestic economy.
He noted that Egypt currently hosts students from over 120 different countries, offering them cutting-edge academic programs alongside rich cultural and historical experiences that promote “educational tourism“.
How Egyptian universities are reaching students in major Nigerian cities
To maximize its impact, the Egyptian delegation is taking its message directly to students in Nigeria’s key urban centers, including Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.
Representatives from ten prominent Egyptian institutions, such as Cairo University, Alexandria University, and Al-Azhar University, are participating on the ground.
According to Egypt Today, students attending the events have the chance to explore specific academic programs, learn about admission requirements, and understand tuition fees.
Additionally, university representatives are conducting face-to-face consultations and preliminary reviews of student qualifications to make the application process as smooth as possible.
Through these personal interactions, Egypt hopes to better understand the needs of the Nigerian market and build a lasting academic bridge between the two nations.
