The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has unveiled plans to establish a new paragliding site in Adaklu in the Volta Region, signaling a strategic move to diversify the country’s adventure tourism portfolio beyond its traditional hubs. The proposed development is part of broader efforts to deepen Ghana’s appeal to thrill-seeking travelers and spread tourism benefits more evenly across regions.
According to Herald Ghana, a team of aviation experts are currently assessing the Adaklu ridges, focusing on wind conditions, terrain steepness, and the suitability of takeoff and landing zones. Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto, disclosed the development during the opening of the 2026 Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival at Odweanoma Mountain. She said the authority is keen on expanding the country’s flagship paragliding event to other regions to deepen tourism impact.
“We are poised to promote domestic tourism and want to spread the paragliding festival to other areas,” she noted, adding that the goal is to host two paragliding festivals annually—one in Kwahu and another in Adaklu. If feasibility studies prove successful, the Adaklu site is expected to be operational by 2027. The proposed expansion is anticipated to boost the local economy by attracting both local and international tourists, creating jobs within the hospitality and service sectors, and promoting eco-friendly aerial tourism in the enclave.
The initiative aligns with the GTA’s “360 Tourism” agenda, which seeks to ensure consistent tourism activity throughout the year, rather than concentrating on peak seasons such as Easter and Christmas. As part of this strategy, the authority also plans to roll out a specialised tour guide programme targeting graduates, who will be trained to provide professional guiding services at various heritage and tourism sites across the country. To enhance their operations, the GTA intends to provide vehicles to the trained guides, enabling them to access remote locations and improve visitor experience.
The authority says the combined investment in infrastructure development and human resource capacity is aimed at positioning Ghana as a competitive destination for both domestic and international travellers.
