Africa: Japa syndrome hits Kano as Nigerian Medical Association, reveals 162 medical doctors, 789 nurses migrate for greener pasture

In a trend dubbed ‘Japa,’ Kano State is witnessing a significant exodus of healthcare professionals as 162 medical doctors and 789 nurses have left the region in pursuit of promising opportunities abroad, according to a disclosure by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano Chapter.

According to signaturetv.org, the NMA, disclosed that a total of 162 medical doctors and 789 nurses have relocated to foreign countries from the state in continuation of the “Japa syndrome”.

The chairman of the association, Dr. Abdullahi Sulaiman stated this to newsmen through a press statement he personally signed.

“It is a bad situation and this is across almost all healthcare workers, not only doctors. They are leaving for Gambia, Somalia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, and many others every week,” he said.

Earlier reported that, the Kano State Government is planning to employ more doctors and other medical personnel to bridge the gap.
