The Embassy of Switzerland has joined Ghanaians in celebrating a major cultural milestone as Kente officially becomes Ghana’s first registered Geographical Indication (GI) product.
This international recognition ensures that the authenticity, heritage, and craftsmanship of Kente are legally protected, safeguarding it from imitation while creating new economic opportunities for Ghanaian artisans and weaving communities.
With this designation, Kente now stands proudly alongside other globally recognized GI products such as Champagne from France, Tequila from Mexico, and Darjeeling tea from India.
The Embassy described the achievement as “a true milestone for Ghana’s culture, creativity, and economy,” marking a new era for the country’s textile industry and cultural heritage on the world stage.
