The Nairobi County Government has ramped up the installation of pedestrian walkways across the city’s Central Business District (CBD), targeting both upper and lower sections in a broader effort to enhance mobility, safety, and urban accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
According to tv47.digital, Nairobi Mobility Chief Officer Dr. Machel Waikenda conducted an inspection tour of both completed and ongoing projects within the CBD.
He emphasized the county’s commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety and the overall urban experience through the expansion of walkways and improved street infrastructure. The project aims to upgrade all walkways within the CBD.
“Governor Sakaja’s administration is determined to restore order and ease mobility in the city. This initiative ensures people can walk freely without fear of encroaching traffic, while also enhancing the city’s aesthetics and functionality,” said Dr. Waikenda.
One of the newly completed sections is the Moi Avenue Service Lane (Ambassadors area), where modern cabro paving has been installed. The transformation has improved not only the area’s organization but also its visual appeal.
Dr. Waikenda called on residents to remain patient and supportive as more construction activities unfold. He revealed that ongoing works include stretches along Haile Selassie Avenue and Taifa Lane, with additional sites already earmarked for upgrades.
“We have a comprehensive plan to construct all major walkways in the CBD. Beyond enhancing movement and safety, the project is also providing job opportunities to our youth, who are working hand-in-hand with county engineers,” he added.
The walkway installation is a key component of Governor Sakaja’s broader urban renewal agenda, which also includes road rehabilitation, traffic decongestion, and improved public infrastructure across Nairobi County.
As the CBD facelift takes shape, city residents can look forward to a safer, more walkable, and orderly urban environment.
