In a significant development for Nairobi’s green spaces, Governor Sakaja Johnson has announced the reopening of Uhuru Park to the public.

The park, which underwent extensive renovations over a two-year period, has been revitalized and transformed into a new and improved recreational space for residents and visitors alike.

According to capitalfm.co.ke, the park, along with Central Park, had been closed in 2022 to facilitate renovations initiated by the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Service.

Speaking during the Mass Registration For Private Security Guard Force Numbers, Sakaja stated that the Kenya Defence Forces had formally handed the park back to City Hall, marking its readiness for public use.

“This event signifies the official opening of this ground to the public and other functions. The Kenya Defence Forces have completed their work. This facility now belongs to the people of Nairobi,” the City Governor declared.

The refurbished park now boasts iconic structures, including monuments commemorating Mau Mau freedom fighters, the Pope, and peace, love, and unity. Additionally, a more defined Freedom Corner has been established in memory of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, further enriching the visitor experience.

Inside the park, Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) has introduced innovative additions such as ice cream parlors at various points. These parlors, constructed using old buses and other antique materials, aim to enhance the park’s aesthetics and provide recreational opportunities for visitors.

Notably, the new-look Uhuru Park features an old aircraft that has been converted into a modern high-end hotel, adding a unique touch to the park’s ambiance.
Furthermore, the park has been augmented with modern garden features, including waterfronts.

These enhancements include a plant nursery, skating park, nature trail, outdoor library, jogging and cycling tracks, maintenance yard, offices, and a shearer garden, offering diverse recreational and leisure options for park-goers.

The reopening of Uhuru Park symbolizes a significant milestone in Nairobi’s urban development and underscores the city’s commitment to providing accessible green spaces for its residents. With its revitalized infrastructure and amenities, the park is poised to become a vibrant hub for recreation, relaxation, and cultural activities, catering to the diverse needs of Nairobi’s populace.
